The Music
In Promised Land the music stays at the edge of the essential: very few, carefully placed notes and a great deal of sound design. Many of the sounds were made from musical instruments — the seagulls, for instance, come from an electric bass, transformed through layers of processing. Only at the end does a theme open up, for a very cinematic piano and a handful of instruments, growing until it becomes heart-rending to carry the final pathos.
